Tura’s social activist writes to CM on poor construction of Health Centre building

Tura, July 11: Cherian Momin, a social activist has written to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to bringing his attention on the substandard and shoddy construction of the 2-storey Health Centre building in Dakopgre, opposite to PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

This comes days after Deputy Commissioner – West Garo Hills and the Executive members of the New Tura Development Forum conducted an inspection wherein it became evident that the quality of work done on the construction is highly disappointing.

He further said that this poses a significant risks to the safety and well-being of the patients and staff who will rely on this health center.

In the letter, he also urged CM, as the highest authority in the state, to take immediate action to rectify the substandard construction and ensure that the health center is made safe and functional for public use.

He highlighted on the steps that need to be urgently undertaken:

1. Swift rectification of construction: I request that qualified and authorized inspectors be promptly deployed to assess the deficiencies in the construction and initiate necessary repairs without delay. This will ensure the building’s structural integrity and safeguard the lives of those who use its facilities.

2. Holding the contractor accountable: It is imperative that a thorough enquiry be conducted to investigate how this substandard work came to pass. The contractor must be held responsible for their negligence, and appropriate legal action should be taken against them. This will demonstrate our commitment to quality and deter similar instances of subpar workmanship in the future.

3. Strengthening oversight and monitoring: To prevent the recurrence of such incidents, it is crucial to strengthen the oversight and monitoring mechanisms for construction projects. Regular inspections, rigorous adherence to quality standards, and enhanced accountability of all stakeholders involved should be implemented consistently.

In the letter, he further appreciated the ongoing efforts of the concerned authorities in addressing this issue. It also stressed on the need for expeditious implementation of the aforementioned actions to rectify the situation and ensure the safety of the health center users.

He requested for CM’s prompt intervention in this matter for the well-being of the citizens of Meghalaya.

” I look forward to witnessing timely action being taken to rectify the substandard construction and promote the safety and welfare of our fellow citizens,” the letter read.
