Dibrugarh, May 12: Two militants belonging to the NSCN were killed during a night-long counter-insurgency operation carried out by security forces near Songking village under Miao police station in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs about militant movement in the area, troops of the Assam Rifles launched a search operation in and around Songking village, leading to an encounter with the militants.
Officials said arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the gunbattle.
According to security sources, the militants had allegedly been camping in the area to extort money from local villagers.
“The NSCN cadres were continuously pressuring villagers to pay extortion money. Based on intelligence inputs, security forces launched a massive combing operation in the area. A fierce gunbattle ensued between the troops and the militants hiding in the jungle. During the night-long operation, two NSCN cadres were eliminated,” an official source said.
Following the encounter, security forces launched an intensive search operation in the surrounding forested areas to track down any remaining militants.
Meanwhile, another exchange of fire reportedly took place late Monday night between Assam Rifles personnel and suspected militants near Chop village under the Wakka circle in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district.
However, there were no immediate reports of casualties from either side in that incident. Further details are awaited.
Security sources said the Tirap, Longding and Changlang (TLC) districts of eastern Arunachal Pradesh continue to remain insurgency-affected areas, with several factions of the NSCN active in the region.
“The local villagers have long suffered due to the frequent movement of militant groups and threats linked to extortion activities,” a source said.
Officials added that extortion remains a major source of funding for insurgent outfits operating in the region, with villagers and businessmen often being targeted for money.
Security forces have intensified anti-insurgency operations across eastern Arunachal Pradesh in recent months, leading to the arrest of several cadres belonging to different NSCN factions.
