Imphal, Nov 9: Violence has once again made a comeback in Manipur with two women killed in separate incidents over the past two days, sparking widespread protests and calls for justice across the State.
The latest incident occurred on Saturday in the Saiton area of Bishnupur district, where a woman was shot dead while working in paddy fields by suspected militants based in the surrounding hills. Eyewitnesses reported that the woman, along with other local farmers, was tending to her crops in the Imphal Valley lowlands when gunfire erupted from elevated positions. She died at the spot.
The killing comes just two days after a horrific attack in Jiribam district, where a 31-year-old woman and mother of three children, Zosangkim Hmar, was reportedly raped, murdered, and set ablaze along with her house in the Zairawn village on Thursday night. Her charred remains were discovered by villagers the following afternoon. Multiple houses were also burnt in the incident.
In response, protests have erupted in Kuki-Zo areas, particularly in Kangpokpi district, where demonstrators demanded justice and increased security. Kuki-Zo women gathered in huge numbers for a sit-in protest in Sadar Hills’ Gamgiphai on Saturday afternoon, condemning the brutal killing.
They also expressed shock at the incident and demanded for immediate security and autonomy for the minority group.
