14 ULFA(I) over ground workers, linkmen nabbed in 2 weeks in upper Assam

Shillong, Nov 9: The joint operations involving Assam Police and Kolkata-based Military Intelligence have continued in upper Assam to dismantle the network of the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent or ULFA (I) in Upper Assam, resulting in the arrest of 14 over ground workers and linkmen of the outfit in 2 weeks.

The intelligence-driven operations started on October 25 and have continued since, with major breakthroughs on October 25 itself, October 26 – 30, and November 4, with the latest successes on November 7 and 9.

On November 7, two over-ground workers (OGWs) linked to ULFA(I), identified as Rinku Nath from Sivasagar District and Tulsi Gogoi from Charaideo District, were apprehended. Both individuals are reportedly involved in ULFA(I) recruitment and financing activities connected to senior ULFA(I) leaders self-styled Brigadier Ganesh Lahon and self-styled Major General Nayan Medi.

On November 9, Assam Police, Military Intelligence teams along with teams of 10 Assam Rifles and 31 Assam Rifles launched a joint crackdown in the Tinsukia and Majuli districts, leading to the arrest of two active sleeper cell members. The suspects, self-styled Captain Bhaiti Pagag, also known as Bhaiti Asom, and self-styled Captain Kulang Moran, alias Montu, were discovered to be in regular communication with self-styled Lieutenant General Michel Dekha Pukhan, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of ULFA(I)’s General Military Headquarters (GMHQ).

This brings the total arrests to 14 OGWs and two active ULFA(I) cadres in the ongoing operation, even as operations are ongoing.

Security forces have intensified their operations in view of ULFA(I)’s ‘Protest Day’ on November 28, 2024, and Republic Day on January 26, 2025, both anticipated to be potential targets for IED attacks.
