Shillong, June 14: With the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections scheduled for 2026, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has hinted at contesting in several constituencies, if not all. The party has already begun identifying potential candidates, though it maintained that it is still too early to make definitive announcements.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh said, “We had a meeting recently in Garo Hills, so that topic of discussion came up with regards to how we feel about taking part in the next MDC elections. But I think it’s too early right now to say. We have started already identifying some promising candidates who we will be fielding—if not all constituencies, at least some.”
When asked whether the party plans to form any alliance in the Garo Hills, Lyngdoh was clear: “No, there is no tie-up. We have decided to go alone.”
UDP currently has only one sitting MDC in the GHADC—Ashahel D. Shira from Rajabala, West Garo Hills. Lyngdoh acknowledged the party’s limited presence but expressed hope for improvement. “As of now, we do have Ashahel D. Shira, Rajabala (West Garo Hills), as our MDC—that is the lone MDC from there. At this time, we will try to see how we can get more MDCs,” he said.
On the party’s strategy or “mantra” for the upcoming elections, Lyngdoh said discussions are underway. “We are working on that right now. As I said, it is too early. As a party, we are trying to find out ways and means to approach the District Council elections. Perhaps a few things we can say and a few things we can’t—these are strategies, basically. Hopefully, at the appropriate time, we will definitely share with all of you.”
Responding to a question on whether the party would strike a balance between experienced leaders and fresh faces, Lyngdoh said, “I think as far as elections and politics are concerned, we have to take into consideration those aspects which are the need of the hour. And it is no doubt—what you have said—that will be one part of the considerations we will be taking before we take a final call on the candidature of any person.”
