SHILLONG, APR 6: UDP legislator from Nongpoh Mayral Born Syiem on Monday dismissed reports of infighting within the United Democratic Party over leadership change, stating he is unaware of any such move and has no involvement in “groupism.”
Asked about rumblings that a majority of UDP members are unhappy with the current leadership, Syiem said, “I am not part of that groupism or those discussions. I am not aware.”
He added that no one had approached him to join any faction.
“My duty is to perform. Till date no one has approached me to have a group to do this or that because they are not happy with the current dispensation — nobody has come to me.”
Syiem insisted his focus remained on governance.
“My duty is that I am having a peaceful sleep every night because I perform my duties sincerely. I have no time for groupism here and there, forming that group, this group — I am totally not in that line.”
He acknowledged that politics is competitive, saying, “Every political party is a challenge for me. All political parties have contacted me. I have friends in all political parties.”
On whether any offers to switch sides had come his way, Syiem replied, “In a vibrant democracy, discussions are always there. Leaving and joining — all this is part of discussion. There have been feelers from all political parties.”
