Guwahati, Jan 8: Just 10 days after the pro-talks faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) signed the historic tripartite peace pact with Assam Government and Government of India, a camp belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Myanmar has reportedly been targeted in drone attacks by Indian Army.
The ULFA-I confirmed this development in a statement issued on Monday, alleging that the Indian Army was responsible for the drone strikes on its camp situated in Myanmar. According to the outfit, the drones were launched from Arunachal Pradesh.
This particular camp, one of several used for cross-border operations into India, provides shelter and training for recruits. In response to the attack, ULFA-I asserted, “By taking such measures, if the Indian state hopes to deviate the organization’s ideologies, then they are harboring false hopes and beliefs.”
It’s worth noting that tensions between the Indian government, the Assam government, and ULFA-I have escalated in recent months, with the Paresh Baruah-led faction refusing to engage in negotiations. In recent months, the anti-talk faction has detonated atleast 3 bomb blasts near defence camps in Assam.
The Centre, the Assam government, and the pro-talk faction of ULFA led by Arabinda Rajkhowa signed the tripartite peace agreement on December 29, 2023 in New Delhi, through which the outfit promised to renounce violence, dissolve the organization, and embrace the democratic process.
While a call has been made to the Paresh Baruah-led faction to shun faction and join mainstream, he refuses to come to negotiation table.
