Tura, Sep 18: The Umbrella Project – Workshop on various hapter-2 NOKPANTE- “Come and Learn” was organised on Monday by the Department of Arts & Culture was inaugurated at the District Auditorium & District Library in Tura.

The programme was graced by Albinush R. Marak, CEM GHADC as the chief guest, Jagdish Chelani, IAS, Deputy Commissioner as the guest of honour; Dikki D Shira, MCS, Director of Arts and Culture and the various resource persons in the different categories of the workshop.

While speaking at the event, the Arts and Culture Director DD Shira said “we started this program in the year 2019, with the idea of bringing all the talented artists of the state under one umbrella. So that the upcoming film makers and artists of the state can benefit from this.

Filmmaker Dominic Sangma while addressing the crowd said that art for our soul is very important. We should celebrate art and know our own culture. And also we can use this medium to show our culture to the rest of the world.

At the event, Jagdish Chelani DC WGH said, “we are looking forward to giving some small funding to upcoming filmmakers from us.”

Meanwhile, the Chief Guest CEM GHADC Albinush R Marak thanked the organisers in his speech for this workshop and said that this is a great opportunity for the aspiring artists to develop their skills and gave best wishes to the participants.

This is the second edition of the five days’ Workshop from September 18th to 22nd  from 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m in their own designated areas within the premises  .

The workshop is being organised on Filmmaking (Script writing – with the focus on preservation of local folk tales, Theatre, Folk traditional instrument Workshop (Dotrong & Chigring) and Art in a Community (Using scrap/waste materials) with the theme “Nokpante- Come and Learn” for all the local aspirants, the young upcoming Artiste/Artist at District Auditorium & District Library, Ringre, Tura, in the West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.

The workshop on script writing is to be done with the focus on the preservation of local folk tales.

Theatre: – Workshops on theatre can help in flourishing creativity, improve academics, and means of self-expression can also be developed. The theatre classes are designed with an idea of pushing people away from their comfort zones and showcase their creativity. Theatre experience are sensory and tactile.

Traditional Musical Instrument Workshop (Dotrong and Chigring): – The advancement of technology in music and globalisation, the Department proposes to conduct a workshop on the aesthetics of a few of the traditional musical instruments of the indigenous tribes of the state.

Art in a Community: This workshop is done with the aim of promoting community engagement and artistic expression. This will also provide the opportunity to collaborate with fellow community members and create meaningful artwork that reflects their shared experiences and values. In these workshops, individuals can explore different art forms and develop a deeper understanding of the power of art in fostering connections within a community.

It must be noted that the workshops will be conducted under the guidance of resource persons for each discipline.

Apart from the workshops, competitions will also be held on the last day of the event. The participants participating in the workshops will compete amongst each other in their own disciplines, and awards will also be given to the winners.
