Shillong, March 21:The retrofitting of Umiam Dam and Spillway Bridges is scheduled to take place from March 31 to April 8 this year, resulting in a complete traffic blockage of the Umiam Bridge.
According to the schedule set by the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL), there will be a minimum of 6 hours of complete traffic blockage on the first day, March 31, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. During this time, only ambulances will be permitted to cross the bridge.
Once the work on the bridge is completed, half of the road downstream of the bridge will be opened for vehicles weighing up to 4 tons for the duration of the 8-day period, from March 31 until 7:00 AM on April 8, 2024. From 7:00 AM onwards on April 8, vehicles weighing up to 15 tons will be allowed downstream of the bridge.
The Deputy Commissioners of East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi Districts will coordinate with the Police Departments to implement the proposed arrangements during this period. Both district administrations will identify locations before and after the Umiam Dam where vehicles will be stopped during the first 6 hours, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, on March 31, 2024.
During the specified period from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, only ambulances will be allowed to ply. Starting from 2:00 PM on March 31, 2024, vehicles weighing up to 4 tons will be permitted until 7:00 AM on April 8, 2024, after which vehicles weighing up to 15 tons will be allowed from 7:00 AM on April 8, 2024, onwards.
