Shillong, June 6: The completion of new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang is likely to be delayed and may miss its deadline of December 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy Project Manager for the construction, Nadeem Kausar said the work is currently going on but at slow pace.

He said they were expecting around 300 – 400 labourers at this stage of the work but are managing with under 100 of them due to the pandemic.

Due to the lockdowns and movement restrictions, labourers are unable to travel or return back to work and the equipment and materials for construction are also unable to reach the site.

According to the tender contract, the handover of the Assembly site to the state government is to be completed by December 2022, but the construction company had targeted to handover before the Budget Session of 2022.

Looking at the situation, Nadeem said it looks difficult to handover the site before March 2022 but they are pushing on to meet their target.
