Tura, Apr 29: Amidst mounting pressure from concerned citizens and various stakeholders, the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills issued an order on Monday afternoon, imposing restriction on the entry of heavy vehicles carrying goods exceeding 9 MT within the Tura Municipal Area.

This decision comes in wake of the tragic road accidents involving dumper trucks, scooters, and bikes in the last 10 days. In response to peaceful protests outside the DC office earlier on Monday morning, where several pressure groups demanded immediate action and justice for the victims, Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani engaged with the agitating groups and assured to look into their concerns.

Chelani pledged to thoroughly investigate the demands put forth by the aggrieved groups, assuring them that the administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring accountability and justice.

Promising stringent measures against violators of motor vehicle regulations, the administration implemented ban on entry of heavy vehicle within the Tura Municipal Area effective from Monday from 6 am to 9 pm.

As per the order, only vehicles carrying goods ranging from 2.5 MT to 9 MT will be permitted to enter the Tura Municipal Area, strictly between 9 pm to 6 am. The order further states that any heavy vehicle seeking entry into the town must obtain written permission from the district administration.

“Exception to this restriction will be granted for government vehicles, vehicles used for official government works, public transport vehicles such as buses, tow-trucks, breakdown vans and recovery vehicles, and vehicles granted exemption by the District Administration,” the order said.

“Government departments utilizing heavy vehicles must provide strict guidance to drivers to adhere to all traffic laws and regulations. This includes but is not limited to obeying speed limits, weight restrictions, and traffic signals. Departments are responsible for ensuring that drivers receive adequate training and are aware of their obligations to promote road safety”, it further said.
