Guwahati, March 6: The Vice-President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, on Friday began his first visit to the Northeast since assuming office, attending the 8th Convocation Ceremony of Nagaland University at its Lumami campus and highlighting the region’s growing role in India’s development.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President described Nagaland as a land where “nature, culture and courage blend in harmony,” stating that the true strength of the state lies in its people and their vibrant traditions.

He emphasised that India’s greatest strength lies in its unity despite diversity. “The strength of Bharat lies not in our differences but in the unity that binds us together,” he said.

Radhakrishnan also praised the tripartite agreement signed in February 2026 between the Centre, the Nagaland government and the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation, expressing confidence that the agreement would address long-standing concerns and promote peace and development in the region.

The Vice-President noted that the agreement was signed under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and appreciated the efforts of Nagaland Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the state government in advancing peace and development initiatives.

Highlighting the Centre’s focus on the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he referred to the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) aimed at boosting infrastructure, social development and livelihood opportunities across the region.

“The world is evolving rapidly, and it is important for young people to continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills,” he said while urging students to build a stronger nation and firmly say “No to drugs.”

The Vice-President also commended Nagaland University for its contributions to higher education since its establishment in 1994 after being carved out of North Eastern Hill University. He highlighted the university’s achievements, including the establishment of a cancer research laboratory and efforts to document indigenous Naga languages and customary laws.

During the visit, he also laid the foundation stone for the HEFA Phase II buildings at the university.

The event was attended by Nagaland Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Deputy Chief Minister T. R. Zeliang, Chancellor of Nagaland University Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Vice-Chancellor Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, along with faculty members, students and other dignitaries.
