Nongpoh, Nov 22: Hundreds of villagers from Umpher 12 Mer, Amphanggre, and Matchokkgre, along with members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Ri Bhoi District, staged a protest rally on Friday to oppose the state government’s plan to relocate the Conservation Training Institute (CTI) under the Soil and Water Conservation Department to Mawkhanu and convert the current site into an industrial estate.

The rally began at Umpher village and concluded at the CTI office, with villagers and supporters voicing their disapproval of the government’s decision, which they claim was made without public consultation or consent.

The protest saw participation from leaders of various organizations, including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Byrnihat Citizens Forum, Garo Students’ Union (Ri-Bhoi Regional Unit), Byrnihat Women Society, and students from St. Jude Secondary School and CTI. Protesters carried placards condemning the government’s plan, denouncing the proposal to transform the CTI area into an industrial estate under the Invest Meghalaya Authority.

Villagers expressed concerns over the environmental and social impact of the decision. Byrnihat, already regarded as one of the most polluted areas in India, would face increased environmental degradation if the industrial project proceeds, they warned. Protesters highlighted that the forest surrounding the CTI site serves as a critical water source for over 3,000 residents, and its destruction would jeopardize both local livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the rally, leaders stressed the need to preserve the CTI site, emphasizing its significance to the local community. They criticized the government for prioritizing industrial development at the expense of public welfare and environmental protection.

Following the march, a meeting was convened with JAC leaders and representatives from participating organizations. They resolved to escalate their opposition by submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister, urging the government to reverse its decision.
