Violence returns to Manipur after 12 days, 3 lives lost in violent clash

Imphal, Aug 18: In a disturbing turn of events, violence had returned to Manipur once again as a confrontation between communities claimed the lives of at least three people on Friday.

This incident marks the resumption of bloodshed after a comparatively peaceful period spanning 12 days.

According to official sources within the Army and police, the clash erupted in the early hours of the morning at Thowai village, situated near Litan in Ukhrul district. This marks the first instance of violence within the Ukhrul district. Reports suggest there was heavy gunfire in the village, with the tragic result of three villagers losing their lives.

Eyewitnesses recount that the disturbing sounds of gunfire shattered the morning tranquillity, creating panic and chaos among the villagers. The confrontation escalated until security forces were dispatched to the scene, ultimately quelling the gunfire and restoring a semblance of order.

Amidst the tragedy, local civil society groups sprang into action, conducting an extensive search operation across nearby villages and forested areas, which resulted in the discovery of the lifeless bodies of the missing trio.

The incident serves as a reminder for urgent need for community dialogue and understanding in order to prevent further bloodshed.
