Shillong, Dec 20: Wah Lukha which is regarded as one of the important rivers situated in the Narpuh Elaka in East Jaintia Hills has turned blue again on Wednesday, December 16 and scientists are expected to use algae to clean the river likely in the month of January
Secretary of Hynriew Shnong Wah Lukha Association, Daiapherbha Lamare told Hubnews, “We are helpless, the river will keep turning blue if it is not treated. One of the scientists is here in Khliehriat and another scientist will arrive in the first week of January”.
It may be mentioned that the rejuvenation activity of Wah Lukha will soon take place after an expert consultant Trinity Impex International has been approached for the major project. The consultant will use algae to clean the river, Lamare said.
The office of the Chief Engineer, Water Resources Department on November 30 has invited bids which would need to be submitted in the e-procurement portal for procurement of equipment and chemicals for “study of water quality of rivers in East Jaintia Hills District with specified study on change of colour of Lunar-Lukha river at certain periods of the year”.
It is not a surprise for the river to turn blue this year as the river turned blues beginning from 2007, then in 2011, again in 2013 and 2016, and most recently in 2019.
