Must read

Shillong, June 29: The water level of Umiam Lake has increased after heavy rainfall in the Khasi Hill region of Meghalaya in the last few days.

On Thursday, the water level rose to 3192.1 ft. from 3165 ft. last week.

The maximum level of water in Umiam reservoir is 3,220 ft.

The recent rains have provided much-needed reprieve to the populace from both the relentless load-shedding, which has lasted for more than two months, and the heat.

It may be mentioned that the State government was counting on good rains to improve the power situation in the State, where load-shedding has been occurring for the past two months for 8–10 hours every day.

If the rainfall had arrived any later, the government was even considering to shut down the Umiam Hydel project as the water level had receded to historic low and generating electricity would become unfeasible.

At the same time, the government had to buy power from private companies to ensure that load shedding was kept at minimum.
