Shillong, April 8: The state Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025 for protection of witnesses in the state.
Announcing this decision after chairing the meeting, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said the three new laws of BNSS have been implemented by the centre and state governments and in this new law there is a provision for protection of witnesses and a system has to be created to protect witnesses.

“Based on that we have approved the rules for the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025 with the objective of giving necessary protection to witnesses in different cases,” he added.

Giving a basic idea of scheme, the CM said in every district level there will be a committee, which will be headed by one of the district magistrates and there will be members from administration and they will decide on the basis of the level of threats and need to give different kinds of protection to the witness, which could be in the form of security in terms of even anonymity, in terms of being able to give their witness or their entire statements on camera.
“So, there are different provisions on the different protection and it is being defined in the rules but as I said the basic idea is that these provisions are there in the new laws and every state has to come up with these different schemes,” he added.
