Shillong, June 26: Santa Mary Shylla, the legislator from Sutnga Saipung and Chairperson of the Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment, has called for an urgent report from SP of West Garo Hills, Abraham T. Sangma, regarding a disturbing incident in which a woman was flogged by four men in Lower Teksragre Village, Damal Asim, on Tuesday.
According to the police, two individuals involved in the incident have been arrested, while two others are still at large. A case has been registered at Tura Women Police Station under the relevant sections.
Shylla, who immediately took note of the incident, contacted the SP West Garo Hills and urged him to expedite the investigation and apprehend the remaining culprits swiftly.
The Chairperson announced that she would be visiting Garo Hills soon and has requested the SP of West Garo Hills to arrange a meeting with the victim and her family. During her visit, Shylla plans to instruct all SPs and officers to ensure that such incidents of violence do not recur.
Commenting on the incident, Shylla expressed her dismay, saying, “It is sad that women are being assaulted openly. It is very unexpected. It is such a big crime for us, and I, being a woman, understand that women will feel scared being in a state like ours. This incident is very unexpected. The government is in full charge, and women should not feel fear. They should know that we will make all the SPs alert against any type of crimes against women happening in any district.”
A video of the woman being flogged has sent shockwaves through society, particularly given Meghalaya’s matrilineal culture, where women are traditionally held in high esteem.
