The replacement of the North Garo Hills SP Bruno A Sangma comes about after a complaint was registered with the Election Commission of India pointing out that the said officer is related to current NPP candidate and sitting MP Agatha K Sangma and it would be against the conduct of a free and transparent election. Bruno Sangma is the brother-in-law of Agatha’s husband.
Meghalaya Government has reshuffled police officers across districts ahead of the announcement of general elections replacing district superintendents of police, including the SPs of Shillong and Tura in an order issued on February 13th.
“She has denied putting up a claim that police personnel assaulted her and says she only put up her injury photo on her status without any statement. We suspect others who saw the status may have picked it up and blamed police,” says the SP.
The directives pertaining to these strategic transfers and new postings were formally issued by Cyril V.D. Diengdoh, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department, on Friday.
