Tuensang, June 26: A major landslide triggered by incessant rain has cut off the Mokokchung-Tuensang road near Chare, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded on both sides of the debris since early Friday morning.
The landslide occurred about 4 km from Tzusapang Road and is believed to have taken place overnight following continuous rainfall in the region.
Cars, taxis and goods carriers travelling between Mokokchung and Tuensang-Chare have been unable to proceed since dawn, with no immediate alternative route available, particularly for heavy vehicles.
The latest disruption comes amid a series of monsoon-induced disasters across Nagaland. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has already reported multiple landslides and flooding incidents in several districts, including road and water pipeline damage at Changki village and another landslide at Longkong village in Mokokchung district.
Across the state, incessant rains have damaged houses, roads, bridges and paddy fields, while several low-lying areas have reported flooding.
With the key road link blocked, commuters and village councils in the Chare area have appealed to the authorities to immediately deploy excavators and manpower to clear the debris, warning that the disruption could affect the movement of essential supplies and patients requiring medical attention.
No casualties have been reported so far.
The NSDMA has advised commuters to avoid night travel on vulnerable hill roads and to check road conditions before undertaking journeys. Residents living in landslide-prone areas have also been urged to remain vigilant as more rainfall has been forecast over the coming days.
