13 suspected Bangladeshis detained in Guwahati

Guwahati, June 20: Thirteen individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals were detained during a verification drive carried out by police in Guwahati on Friday, amid continuing efforts to identify illegal5 residents in the city.

The operation was conducted in the Arya Nagar area, where police traced the group to a guest house during routine checks and document verification exercises.

According to officials, the group included men, women and several children. Following preliminary questioning, all 13 individuals were taken to the Border Branch of Paltan Bazar Police Station for further verification and legal formalities.

Police said authorities are currently examining their documents, identities and travel histories to determine their nationality and establish how they arrived in Guwahati.

“Our investigation is underway. All 13 individuals have been detained and interrogation is continuing,” a police official said.

The latest detention comes as security agencies across Assam have intensified verification drives and surveillance measures to check illegal infiltration and identify individuals residing in the state without valid documents.

Officials said further action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
