Shillong, Oct 2: Three potential candidates have emerged for the United Democratic Party (UDP) to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election from the Shillong parliamentary seat.
The three candidates include- former Mawlai MLA, PT Sawkmie; Former Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief and MDC of Shella, Titoswell Chyne; and Former MLA of Nongthymmai, Dr. Jemino Mawthoh.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sawkmie stated that he is willing to contest for the MP election if the party deems him fit for the job. However, Sawkmie mentioned that the party has not made any decisions regarding candidature. Nevertheless, as one of the senior and experienced politicians, he will be prepared.
Sawkmie added that his 30 years of experience in politics will allow him to work for the betterment of the people, and if the party chooses him, it will open more doors for him to serve the people.
Former CEM, Titos Chyne, stated that the party has undertaken the task of scrutinizing the right candidate for the party to contest in the upcoming MP election. He informed that the party is taking steps to identify the right candidate, but the party will focus more on highlighting the achievements from past years that have benefited the people at large. Chyne stated that as a party, the UDP will be prepared to address the people regarding the accomplishments of the party. He cited examples of the Executive Committee (EC) led by him in the KHADC since 2019, during which many Council Acts and Bills were introduced for the benefit of the public.
However, he informed that some individuals have come forward to suggest their names to contest from the UDP, but the party has not made any decision on the matter as of now.
