30 people including 23 Army personnel missing after cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim

Sikkim, Oct 4: At least 30 people including 23 Army personnel have been reported missing and at least eight bridges washed away in north Sikkim late on Tuesday night

This happened due to sudden cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Valley flash flood occurred in the Teesta River in Lachen valley.

The Defence PRO Guwahati said, “Due to a sudden cloud burst over Lhonak lake in North Sikkim, a flash flood occurred in Teesta River in Lachen valley. Some establishments along the valley have been affected and efforts are on to confirm details.

It further said that “twenty-three personnel have been reported missing…Search operations are underway.”

Also, some vehicles are said to have submerged under the slush.

According to the statement released by the Army’s Eastern Command read, “Release of water from the Chungthang dam led to a sudden increase in water level upto 15-20 feet high downstream. This has led to Army vehicles parked at Bardang near Singtam getting affected. 23 personnel have been reported missing and some vehicles are reported submerged under the slush. Search operations are underway.”

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also visited the affected area.

Meanwhile, a search operation is underway to find the missing army personnel.
