Agartala, Jan 6: In a major crackdown on human trafficking, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Tripura has arrested 35 Indian nationals over the past five months for facilitating the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas into India.
According to officials, these arrests were made at various locations across the state, underscoring the scale of trafficking operations in the region. On Sunday night, GRP personnel, in collaboration with Border Security Force (BSF) jawans, apprehended five traffickers from Konaban in Sepahijala district.
Since August 1, the GRP has also detained over 115 Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas at Agartala railway station and other key locations. In joint operations, the BSF and Tripura State Police have separately arrested several traffickers from various parts of the state.
Over the past five months, approximately 600 Bangladeshi nationals and 63 Rohingyas were apprehended by security forces after illegally entering India. The BSF, in its operations last year, reported the arrest of 55 Rohingyas, 620 Bangladeshi nationals, and 260 Indian nationals, including traffickers.
Officials attribute the surge in infiltration to political unrest in Bangladesh, which intensified following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5. The turmoil has led to increased movement of migrants into India’s northeastern states.
