41-Meghalaya Bn NCC cleans banks of River Simsang in Williamnagar, spreads awareness among locals

Willliamnagar, Apr 1: The 41-Meghalaya Battalion NCC, under the aegis of NCC Group Headquarters, Shillong, has taken up the task of spreading awareness among local populace in the vicinity of River Simsang in cleaning plastic and other waste materials from its banks.

On Friday, 150 Senior Division (boys) and Senior Wing Cadets (girls) of 41-Meghalaya Bn NCC from Loyola College, Williamnagar and Government College Williamnagar, along with 200 students carried out an awareness rally in Williamnagar starting from Loyola College and culminating at the banks of River Simsang. The rally cleaned the plastics and other wastes along the banks of River Simsang and disposed it off.

Subedar Ganesh Gurung, Havildar Mohammad Kabi Sheikh and Havildar JR Reddy from 41 Meghalaya Bn NCC along with Lieutenant Antony, Lieutenant Dafflin (Associate NCC Officers) of Loyola College and Balkari B. Sangma (Care Taker Officer), Government College Williamnagar, organized the disciplined and systematic conduct of the event.

Before the start of the cleaning driver, the Principal of Loyola College, Williamnagar, Dr. Sunny Augustine, welcomed the gathering. The rally was addressed by Aloysius Ch Marak, ADC and CEO of Williamnagar Municipality, and Sathish K.S., Divisional Forest Officer, flagged off the rally to Simsang River.

The River Simsang, which is known as River Someshwari in Bangladesh, originates from the Nokrek Peak and flows through the heart of Garo Hills touching, Williamnagar (Headquarters of East Garo Hills District), Nongalbibra, Rewak, Siju and Baghmara (Headquarters of South Garo Hills district) dividing the area of Garo hills into two parts and enters the Netrakona district of Bangladesh.

Puneet Sagar Campaign and NCC

Mentionably, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) has been actively participating in the nationwide ‘Puneet Sagar Campaign’ on a mission mode since December 01, 2021, to keep the beaches, seashores and riverbanks free from plastic and other waste materials. The aim of Puneet Sagar Abhiyaan is to increase awareness about the importance of keeping clean beaches and riverbanks.
