SHILLONG, FEB 23: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday announced that more than 76,957 electricity poles will be replaced across Meghalaya under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), with outages required for the work.
“The power cuts are not scheduled load-shedding… there are rusted poles, more than 1,000 transformers which are of low capacity and very old in nature. There are wires that have been there for the last 30 years,” Sangma said, replying to the debate on the Governor’s Address.
He explained that supply must be switched off while poles, wires and transformers are changed.
“All these disruptions… are not because of load-shedding but because of the requirement for implementation of the project,” he said.
Sangma added that the department and MeECL will advertise shutdowns in advance and said the drive aims to improve power quality.
