Guwahati, Feb 5: Four pieces of elephant tusk weighing a total of 9.60 kilograms were seized during a search operation conducted on Wednesday at Hazarikapara in Sipajhar, Darrang district of Assam.
The operation was carried out by the Anti-Smuggling Unit of the Customs Division, Guwahati.
According to officials, the action was based on specific intelligence inputs developed by customs officers, which indicated that an individual in possession of elephant tusks was looking for prospective buyers. Acting on the information, a team of officers conducted a search at a residential premises, leading to the recovery of the contraband wildlife items.
The seized elephant tusks were taken into custody under the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Officials said the seized items, along with the apprehended individual(s), are being handed over to the jurisdictional Forest authorities for further investigation and necessary legal action.
