Guwahati, June 27: Centuries-old Po:Ro Apong, traditionally brewed in Mising homes for generations, is set to reach global shelves with the launch of Ti:Po, a premium bottled version that blends indigenous knowledge with modern food science. The initiative aims to introduce to national and international markets a brew that has long remained rooted in the cultural traditions of Northeast India.
Launched in Guwahati on Friday, the brand seeks to preserve the authenticity of Po:Ro Apong by standardising its quality, extending its shelf life and creating sustainable livelihoods for the Mising women who have perfected the art of brewing the beverage for generations.
Speaking at the launch, Ti:Po co-founder Dr. Dipankar Kalita said the brand name was suggested by the mother of his fellow co-founder, Abhijit. In the Mising language, “Ti:Po” loosely translates to “after having this, my heart feels happy.”

The company is currently working with two women-led self-help groups—Ardha SHG of Silapathar and Polo SHG of Jonai—comprising about 20 women each. While the women continue brewing Apong using traditional methods, the beverage is scientifically processed and bottled in Guwahati to ensure quality, consistency and a longer shelf life. Ti:Po is also expanding its team to strengthen production and marketing.
“Po:Ro Apong has been an integral part of Mising culture for thousands of years, but challenges in preservation and standardisation prevented it from reaching larger markets. Using patented technology, we have extended its shelf life to more than four to five years without compromising its quality,” said co-founder Abhijit. “Just as the world knows Japan for sake, Russia for vodka and Europe for wine, we want Assam to be recognised for Po:Ro Apong.”
Wine expert Ajay R. Show said the uniqueness of Ti:Po lies in successfully bridging traditional brewing practices with commercial viability through modern processing and packaging while preserving the drink’s authentic taste and character.
For the women behind the venture, the initiative is also creating new economic opportunities.

“This partnership has changed our lives. We now have a steady income and can better support our families. It makes us proud to see a tradition passed down by our forefathers preparing to reach the world,” said Pranita Doley of Ardha SHG.
“I’m really proud that our tradition will now be known across the globe,” said Momi Doley Pegu of Polo SHG.
The launch also featured a performance by noted Assamese musician Joi Baruah, adding a cultural touch to the celebration.
With the launch of Ti:Po, a brew deeply rooted in Mising culture is ready to take flight—offering the world a taste of Assam, one premium bottle at a time.
