Peren, June 27: In a bid to strengthen agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods in Nagaland’s hill districts, Assam Rifles on Saturday organised a Farmers–Scientists Interaction Programme at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, and distributed agricultural inputs under the North Eastern Hill (NEH) Scheme.
The programme, held in collaboration with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), KVK Peren and ICAR Nagaland Centre, Jalukie, focused on promoting modern farming techniques, livestock management and animal healthcare among local farmers.
Scientists and subject matter experts from the three institutions interacted directly with cultivators, addressing field-level challenges and offering practical solutions on soil health management, integrated pest control, high-yielding crop varieties, and scientific practices in poultry, piggery and dairy farming.

As part of the initiative, farmers were provided with agricultural inputs aimed at enhancing productivity and improving incomes, in line with the NEH Scheme’s objective of supporting sustainable agriculture in the Northeast’s hill regions.
The interactive session also enabled farmers to share ground realities and receive on-the-spot technical guidance from researchers and experts.
The event is part of Assam Rifles’ broader civic action initiatives across Nagaland and the Northeast. In recent months, the force has organised veterinary camps in remote areas of Phek, Kiphire and Mon districts, offering free treatment, deworming and vaccination for livestock. It has also distributed seeds, saplings and farming tools to self-help groups and farmers in Tuensang and Zunheboto to encourage horticulture and organic farming.
Assam Rifles has additionally supported livelihood-generation activities through workshops on mushroom cultivation, beekeeping and food processing, while providing assistance for piggery and poultry units under various civic action programmes.
Known as the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” Assam Rifles has increasingly expanded its community outreach programmes beyond border guarding, with officials saying such initiatives not only strengthen ties between security forces and local communities but also contribute significantly to food security and income generation in remote districts like Peren.
