Tura, July 17: Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Jagdish Chelani, has warned of legal repercussions if the members of A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) do not end their hunger strike by Monday, saying the group does not have the permission for it and that it is illegal.

He Informed the permission given to ACHIK was only for a day, which was for July 11. The following day, the group had requested for additional day but added hunger strike part to the protest, which the district administration had declined. Although the administration did allow them to hold peaceful protest for 7 days but without the hunger strike part.

“Legally the group had requested for a peaceful demonstration for one day. Which we had allotted for 11th of July, post that the group had re-requested for additional day and added the hunger strike part to it, which the district administration hadn’t accepted at that time and even now the group has not been approved for sitting for a hunger strike. We had accepted for an extension of upto 7 days. At this point in time, they are in violation of Section 188 of IPC of violation of order of a public servant,” DC Chelani informed.

Sources informed that a delegation of protestors had on Sunday assured to end the hunger strike at 4 pm on Monday if the DC visits their protest site, which he obliged to and visited them on Monday but not only has the hunger strike not ended, more people have joined them.

“But we understand sympathetically from an emphatic point of view that the demands… they have been doing it (protest) peacefully and we would request the organizers again that if they fail to come to a logical conclusion, there will be some repercussions legally against them but so far the group has been doing it peacefully and we will be in talks with the leaders of different political groups that they should end it as soon as possible,” he said.
