Row over Amit Shah’s fake video: NSUI seek unconditional release of Congress worker Reetam Singh

Must read

Guwahati, May 4: National General Secretary of NSUI, Assam Unit, Kabir Ahmad on Friday demanded unconditional release of arrested Congress Worker Reetam Singh. Assam police had arrested Reetam Singh on April 29 for allegedly circulating fake video of Amit Shah, which has gone viral.

Speaking to media at Rajiv Bhavan Guwahati, Kabir Ahmad said that the arrest is uncalled for as the video of Amit Shah was all over the internet for the past two weeks. “There is no democracy in this country today, people are being arrested without any reason whatsoever. If Reetam Singh is not released unconditionally, NSUI will stage protest across Assam,” Ahmad said.

“The alleged video was there in social media for weeks before his arrest. He had only reposted that video. The truth will be known only after the investigation. But those who have reposted the videos many times have not been arrested, why only Reetam Singh ?” questioned Ahmad.

Reetam Singh was the war room coordinator of the Congress party in Assam.

The Assam Congress had distanced themselves from the controversy saying that the post by Reetam was completely personal and was not related to the Congress party. However, the party has condemned the arrest and criticised the government’s policies that were detrimental to democracy.

The Union Home Minister had posted the original and fake video in his X handle, and had said, “The Congress has now resorted to misleading citizens with fake videos out of panic and fear of defeat. The right to reservations in the country belongs to SC, ST, and OBC brothers and sisters, and as long as the BJP government is in office, no one can change it.”

It further said, “The INDIA Alliance has given reservations to Muslims, reducing the share of SCs, STs, and OBCs. Congress is misleading people by editing a speech of mine in which I committed to abolishing the unconstitutional reservations for Muslims. Directions have been issued to the police to address this issue as per the law. If you come across any such fake video anywhere, please inform us about the details of the disseminator. We will take strict action against the culprits.”
