Agartala, Feb 24: After nearly 18 months of suspension, the international Maitree bus service connecting Agartala, Dhaka and Kolkata has resumed operations, restoring a key cross-border transport link between India and Bangladesh.
The service recommenced with a bus departing from Kolkata, travelling via Dhaka, and reaching the Akhaura Integrated Check Post in Agartala. The revival of this long-distance international route follows the formation of the new government and is being viewed as a positive step toward strengthening bilateral connectivity and cooperation.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, speaking to the media, said the reopening of the route would inject fresh momentum into tourism, trade and cultural exchanges between the two neighbouring nations. He expressed optimism that enhanced security arrangements and smoother communication would further deepen people-to-people ties.
Highlighting the broader economic implications, the minister underscored the importance of improved regional connectivity. He noted that better integration with rail networks, enhanced utilisation of the Maitree Bridge at Sabroom, and improved access to ports could significantly benefit the Northeast’s economy and stimulate business activities.
On the first day of operations, 18 passengers travelled from Kolkata. The prolonged suspension of the service had impacted tourism flows, cross-border trade, and the regional economy. With operations resuming, stakeholders anticipate renewed economic activity and increased engagement across the border.
Passengers and officials accompanying the inaugural journey reported a smooth trip with no major disruptions. While minor concerns were noted in some metropolitan stretches, the overall journey remained normal.
The Agartala–Dhaka segment is also scheduled to resume regular operations, further strengthening international connectivity between India and Bangladesh.
The restoration of the Maitree bus service is widely regarded as a significant development in reinforcing communication, commerce and friendly ties between the two countries.
