Tura, Oct 9: A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has objected to an alleged naming of a road in North Garo Hills after a martyr of CRPF who was killed in Jharkhand by the Naxalites.
AHAM said the alleged naming of the road was done by the Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills, RP Marak, while remembering the martyr.
While appreciating and honouring the martyred who had been killed in Jharkhand, AHAM, however, is of the view that if the DC is so keen to name roads after martyrs, he should name them after the legendary Garo martyrs and leaders such as Sonaram R Sangma, Togan Nengminja, and Capt. Williamson A. Sangma and others.
At the same time, it feels that the DC should have taken the consent of all the Garo NGOs, the local people in North Garo Hills, the intellectual elders of the Garo society before running into naming one of the roads in Garo Hills.
“Due to British administrative legacy there is too much of non-Garo names inside Garo Hills and the organization feels that it is high time that all the nomenclatures of the streets, localities and villages in Garo Hills are changed into its original name as there is a pan India Movement in regard to that and our Khasi and Mizo brothers have taught the importance of local nomenclature of streets, roads, localities and villages,” said Cherian G Momin, Chief Organising Secretary of AHAM’s Central Executive Body in a press statement on Saturday.
“We, therefore, request the Administration of North Garo Hills to take the corrective measure on this issue and urged the civil societies and NGOs of North Garo Hills to rake up the issue for the betterment of Garo Hills,” added Momin.
