Guwahati, Aug 23: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, on Friday hosted an interaction with its newly appointed President, Padma Shri Prof.. (Dr.) B.K.S. Sanjay—an internationally acclaimed orthopaedic surgeon with over four decades of experience.

Welcomed by AIIMS Guwahati Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik, Dr. Sanjay outlined his roadmap to position the institute as a centre of excellence in clinical care, education, and research, tailored to the region’s unique healthcare needs.

Addressing faculty and staff, Dr. Sanjay stressed the importance of innovation, region-specific medical programs, and a strong research ecosystem to combat critical challenges in the Northeast, including cancer, cardiac diseases, drug addiction, and disabilities. “AIIMS Guwahati must not only deliver advanced healthcare but also nurture the next generation of competent and compassionate doctors,” he said, urging teamwork and integrity.

Highlighting the institute’s facilities, Dr. Sanjay pointed to the Trauma Centre, the advanced Radiology Department with a 3 Tesla MRI for early cancer detection, and a specialised Cardiology Department. He assured that patients benefit from free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, while affordable medicines are made accessible through Jan Aushadhi and Amrit Ausadhi Kendras.

The new President also underscored community-focused initiatives, such as immunisation services, the yellow fever vaccination clinic, a 15-bedded de-addiction centre, and rehabilitation facilities for Divyangjans. Expressing special concern for children with cerebral palsy, he pledged that no child would be denied treatment for want of resources.

Faculty members welcomed his vision and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing AIIMS Guwahati as a premier healthcare hub for the Northeast and beyond.
