Must read

Guwahati, May 3: Perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal who is also the president of All  India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has been positive to win the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat for the fourth consecutive time.

74-years-old Ajmal, who founded a political party in Assam All India  United Democratic Front(AIUDF) in 2005, and since 2009, Dhubri Lok Sabha seat was under AIUDF.

In 2009, Badruddin Ajmal won the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat with a vote share of 76.31 per cent, a margin of more than 1.84 lakh votes. Ajmal won from the seat again in 2014 with more than 5.92 lakh votes and a vote share of 43.26 per cent. He again bagged the seat for the third time in 2019 with more than 7.18 lakh votee and a vote share of 42.66 per cent.

Earlier, Dhubri has been a bastion of Congress party but in 2009 for the first time a newly floated party AIUDF led by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal snatched away the seat from Congress.

Ajmal’s popularity in the constituency can be attributed to infrastructure initiatives, construction of the Dhubri Phulbari Bridge, the establishment of Rupsi Airport, and development of Dhubri Medical College. He is also known for his fiery speeches regarding his contributions to the area.

Badruddin Ajmal has been seen pretty confident during the election rallies and he confidently claimed that he will win the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat for fourth times but the anti-incumbency factor has been one of the major factors against him.

Ajmal has a huge influence over the Bengali speaking Muslims voters of lower Assam and was an ally of the Congress in the last assembly polls and even in the UPA. But, this time, he faces a huge contest from Congress and AGP-BJP.

During his election rally, to appease the muslim voters, Ajmal promised to build 700 Madrassas if he is re-elected.

The Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency had ten assembly segments earlier and now has 11 Assembly segments after delimitation. The Legislative assembly constituency segments in the constituency are: Golokganj, Dhubri, Birsing Jarua, Gauripur, Bilasipara, Mankachar, Jaleswar, Goalpara East, Srijangram, Mandia, and Chenga.

Dhubri Lok Sabha seat will go to polls in the third phase on May 7.
