Guwahati, June 22: AIUDF chief and Binnakandi MLA Badruddin Ajmal formally entered the Assam Assembly on Monday, taking oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and signalling his return to active state politics.
Ajmal, who had missed the Assembly’s mass swearing-in ceremony in May while on the Hajj pilgrimage, was administered the oath by Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass in his official chamber. Several AIUDF leaders and former legislators were present during the ceremony.
Speaking to reporters after taking oath, Ajmal said his return to state politics was a decision taken collectively by the party.
“I felt that I should take part in local state politics. Our party took the decision and asked me to contest from here. After that, I fought the election and the people gave me their support,” he said.

The AIUDF chief used the occasion to raise a range of issues, including inflation, poverty, minority welfare and alleged discrimination. He claimed that political developments in recent years had created anxiety among sections of minority communities and said elected representatives must work to address such concerns.
Ajmal also launched a fresh attack on the BJP-led governments over rising prices of cooking gas, fuel and essential commodities, arguing that inflation continues to place a heavy burden on ordinary households.
On eviction and encroachment-related issues, he said the government must ensure proper verification and rehabilitation before undertaking any action, adding that his party would continue to pursue such matters through legal and democratic means.
“We will continue to fight against inflation, poverty and issues affecting common people,” Ajmal said.
His oath-taking marks his formal return to the state legislature, setting the stage for renewed political sparring between the AIUDF and the ruling BJP-led alliance on a range of contentious issues in the months ahead.
