Guwahati, Aug 1: In another blow to Indian National Congress (INC) in its struggle to keep its flock of MLAs together, its two-time MLA from Thowra in Assam, Sushanta Borgohain has resigned from the party on Friday and also resigned as MLA from Assembly on Saturday.
His resignation has been accepted by the Speaker and is set to join the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Sunday evening.
In his resignation letter addressed to state Congress president Bhupen Borah, Borgohain has blamed the present “internal political atmosphere” in the party as reason that forced him to take the ‘painful’ decision. He said he tried hard to keep the party relevant in the State, but it was met with futility.
“Unfortunately, all the efforts in this direction prove futile, compelling me to take this ultimate decision and the exact reasons for such a painful move on my part have already been conveyed to the senior leadership of the party both in the State and at the Centre,” Borgohain wrote in his letter to the Assam Congress president.
Sushanta Borgohain is the second Assam MLA from the Congress to quite the party since Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government took charge in the state after Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi quit the party and Assembly last.
Sushanta Borgohain defeated Kushal Dowari by 2049 votes. Borgohain secured 47,949 votes while BJP candidate Dowari secured 45,900.
With Borgohain’s depurture Congress strength in the 126 member Assam Assembly is reduced to 27 from 29 seats it won in the elections earlier this year.
