Guwahati, March 7: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has decided to contest the 2026 Assam Assembly elections solo, aiming for 35 constituencies. The decision was finalized during a meeting of party MLAs and office bearers at the MLA Hostel in Dispur on Friday.
“We have decided to go solo in 2026. AIUDF will contest from 35 seats,” said party vice president Aminul Islam, addressing reporters after the meeting.
However, he added that in other constituencies, the party plans to support secular parties to help them secure victory.
Islam mentioned that AIUDF is still finalizing its panchayat election strategy. The exact number of seats the party will contest in the local body elections will be determined after district committees submit their reports to the central leadership.
“We had detailed discussions about the upcoming panchayat polls, the current situation of panchayats, and our preparedness for the assembly elections,” he stated.
Dismissing speculation about alliances or mergers, Islam called such reports propaganda by rival parties attempting to weaken AIUDF. “We will not forge any alliance with any party. As of today, we have decided to contest alone. However, future decisions will depend on the political scenario,” he clarified.
Islam also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to peace and development, stating that AIUDF has always advocated for unity and integrity among Assam’s diverse ethnic communities over the past 20 years.
Commenting on Assam Nagarik Samaj’s initiative to unite anti-BJP forces, Islam revealed that during the last assembly elections, AIUDF had discussions with Dr. Hiren Gohain, leading to the formation of a Grand Alliance with the Congress and 15 other parties.
However, this time, “he did not invite us for discussions. He has alienated AIUDF, and the people will respond in the elections,” he said.
Taking a dig at Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, Islam downplayed his influence, stating: “He attended some meetings in minority areas and drew crowds. But that does not mean people will vote for him.”
