Tura, June 16: The dreadful Covid-19 disease is taking a heavy toll on families as a more powerful variant of the virus identified as Delta is said to have entered community spread in the state as more and more people are quickly getting infected with the new cases and victims turning out to be from children’s age group.

On Wednesday a young boy aged 8 years died from complications arising out of the viral infection.

The boy had been brought by his family from the remote region of Chokpot in South Garo Hills and had tested positive for the virus.

He passed away during treatment at the district Maternity and Child Hospital on Thursday morning.

The entire village has been turned into a containment zone following the death.

The death of a child is the second case of a minor dying from the pandemic.
On Tuesday, another child aged just 4 years lost her life in Williamnagar government hospital from complications arising of the disease.

Today’s death marks the third infant casualty from covid in Garo Hills.

The first victim was a couple of months old baby from South West Garo Hills district who tested positive for covid but the parents shockingly did not seek admission for treatment and instead returned home leading to the death of the child.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has appealed to parents to keep vigil of children for any symptoms.

“We have to take precautions, warn people and vaccinate,” he appealed.
