Shillong, June 13: In a move aimed at strengthening biodiversity research and conservation efforts in the Northeast, Lt Gen Neeraj Shukla, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Gajraj Corps, visited the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) regional centre in Shillong to operationalise a collaboration between the Indian Army, the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) and ZSI.
During the visit on June 12, Lt Gen Shukla held discussions with Jennifer Lyngdoh, Scientist-E and Head of Office at ZSI Shillong, along with researchers working in the fields of entomology, herpetology, bat ecology and aquatic biodiversity.
The discussions focused on developing joint initiatives for scientific research, biodiversity conservation and knowledge-sharing across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, regions known for their rich but often understudied ecosystems.
Under the collaboration, the Indian Army will facilitate access for ZSI scientists to remote and difficult-to-reach areas of the Northeast, enabling surveys and documentation of faunal and aquatic species in regions that have remained largely unexplored.
Officials said the partnership is expected to support scientific studies, species conservation, ecological documentation and the publication of research findings, helping expand knowledge of the region’s biodiversity among researchers, conservationists and the wider public.
The initiative seeks to combine the Army’s logistical reach and presence in remote areas with ZSI’s scientific expertise to strengthen efforts to document and preserve the Northeast’s unique natural heritage.
The collaboration is also expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of India’s biodiversity and promote conservation awareness through research and scientific outreach.
