Itanagar, July 12: A curfew has been imposed in Roing, the district headquarters of Lower Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday following the death of a 17-year-old boy who was allegedly attacked by a mob while in police custody on Friday.
According to reports, the teenager a migrant worker from Assam’s Barpeta district had been arrested on Thursday after being accused of sexually assaulting minor girls residing in a private school hostel.
The allegations, which surfaced following a police complaint, are currently being investigated under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
On Friday afternoon, tensions escalated outside the Roing police station after news of the alleged offences spread. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of people gathered, broke into the station, and forcibly removed the accused from custody. The youth was severely beaten before police could intervene. Though he was briefly rescued and shifted to a local hospital, officials confirmed that he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Arunachal Pradesh Police have since completed a post-mortem and launched a detailed investigation into both the original allegations and the subsequent incident at the police station. Sources indicate that school authorities may also be questioned as part of the ongoing inquiry.
As of Saturday, four additional companies of security personnel have been deployed in Roing to maintain order. The situation remains tense but under control, police officials said.
State Home Minister, Mama Natung is reportedly in constant contact with local law enforcement and administrative officials to monitor developments.
