Tura, July 12: Allegations of wage discrepancies at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) Food Storage Depot in Nazing Bazar, Tura, have prompted action from the pressure group ACHIK Krima, which is now seeking accountability from the concerned contractors.
The issue surfaced after a group of labourers working at the depot submitted a written complaint to the ACHIK Krima Balsanang Unit, claiming they were being underpaid and were unaware of the government-fixed wage rates. They also raised concerns over unexplained deductions from their wages, including Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contributions.
Acting on the complaint, members of ACHIK Krima and representatives of the labourers visited the FCI Tura office on July 11 to seek clarification. However, FCI staff were unable to provide any details, citing the absence of the contractors, who are based in Shillong.
The contract for labour services at the depot has been awarded to M/S Arjun Nongrum, with Mr. Biknal M. Marak named as the authorised local representative. ACHIK Krima has announced plans to return on July 15, demanding that the contractor be present and provide comprehensive details about the wage structure, EPF deductions, and the terms of the labour contract.
“We don’t know what the central government wage rate is, and the contractor hasn’t informed us either. That’s why we reached out to ACHIK Krima to help us get the facts,” said Babil D Sangma, Secretary of the FCI Labour Union, speaking to Hub News.
While speaking to HubNews, Pilbirth Ch Momin the General Secretary of the ACHIK Krima Balsanang Unit, confirmed that the group has officially informed the Labour In-Charge to ensure that all relevant documents and wage records are made available during their next visit.
“The lack of transparency is a serious issue. We expect full cooperation from the contractor on July 15,” Momin added.
