Arunachali youth assaulted in Delhi’s Karol Bagh; Allegations of racial abuse spark outrage

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 11: An Arunachali youth was allegedly assaulted in the Karol Bagh area of central Delhi following a dispute at a meat shop, triggering renewed concerns over the safety of people from North East India in the national capital.

The victim, Arjun Rimo (24), a resident of Pampoli in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, was reportedly attacked on January 8 while purchasing meat in Regarpura, Karol Bagh. According to accounts shared by friends and members of the North East community, the incident escalated from a verbal argument into a physical assault, allegedly accompanied by racial slurs. The victim is said to be undergoing medical treatment, with community members expressing concern over his condition.

The incident has drawn sharp reactions, especially in the wake of a recent fatal attack on a student from Tripura in Dehradun, reinforcing fears of a pattern of racial violence against people from the North East in other parts of India.

However, the Delhi Police have issued an official statement presenting a different version of events. According to police records, a PCR call (DD No. 110A dated January 8, 2026) was received at Karol Bagh Police Station regarding a quarrel at Street No. 61, Regarpura.

Police stated that the dispute occurred between Arjun Rimo and the shop owner, Mukesh, along with his son Yogesh, over the weighing of meat. The matter was described as a “petty quarrel.” Medical examination of the complainant reportedly found no fresh external injuries and no evidence of loss of consciousness or serious trauma. Police further said that no evidence of racial slurs was found during the preliminary inquiry.

Preventive action has been taken against the shop owner and his son under Sections 126/170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Senior police officers also counselled the victim, and contact details of the investigating officer and station house officer were shared with him.

Civil society groups and members of the North East community have reiterated demands for stronger safeguards, faster investigations, and zero tolerance for racial discrimination, stressing that repeated incidents—alleged or confirmed—continue to create fear and insecurity.
