Guwahati, Aug 19: Guwahati police have arrested 11 staff members of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) — eight men and three women — for allegedly extorting money from families of newborns.

The arrested persons have been identified as Nayanmoni, Pratima Sarkar, Prabin Deka, Lankeswar Rajbangshi, Azizur Rahman, Golok Talukdar, Chinmoy Deka, Shukla Bairagi, Ashim Deka, Alka Choudhury, and Nandu Das.

Parents alleged that the staff charged between ₹500 and ₹1,000 for basic services such as “trolley pullers” and even tea for employees.

A case (No. 140/25) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered.

Meanwhile, Guwahati police took suo motu cognizance of complaints that certain lower-ranked staff had been demanding money from patients in exchange for medical services.

“A case has been registered against GMCH staffers for extorting money from patients. Several persons have been arrested and further investigation is underway,” said DCP Guwahati, Mrinal Deka.

In a separate development, the Assam government on Monday launched a two-pronged probe into the tragic death of a 15-day-old infant at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of GMCH.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who termed the incident “gross negligence,” announced the formation of a three-member high-level inquiry panel, even as Guwahati police registered a case based on an FIR filed by the baby’s father.

Sarma, who visited GMCH on Monday evening, expressed strong displeasure over lapses in patient care.

“Despite having sufficient equipment and fewer patients today, three infants were kept on one bed. This is unacceptable negligence. Accountability will be fixed. The nurse on duty has already been suspended pending investigation. The hospital administration should issue a formal apology to the bereaved family,” the CM said.
