Guwahati, Apr 24: A sessions court in Nagaon has sentenced 20 persons to life imprisonment in the 2018 Abhi-Neel mob lynching case, bringing closure to one of Assam’s most shocking incidents of vigilante violence.
Pronouncing the sentence on Friday, Sessions Judge Dibyajyoti Mahanta convicted all 20 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on each.
The convicts are Biswa Ram Swargiary, Pantheng Basumatary, Alphajoz Timung, Inosen Engti, Raikom Timung, Ratneswar Terrang, Phukan Lekhte, Anos Timung, Pres Timung, Rupsing Kro, Dhono Mech, Babu Singh Kro, Bikram Hanse, Sikari Rongpi, Babu Rongpi, Bidyasing Rongpi, Mensing Kro, Dipjyoti Basumatary, Wares Rongpi, and Onda Mech.
The sentencing follows the court’s April 20 verdict, in which 20 of the 45 accused were found guilty, while 25 others were acquitted after trial.
The case pertains to the killing of two youths in Karbi Anglong in 2018, who were lynched by a mob triggered by rumours of child abduction.
Senior advocate Bijan Mahajan, appearing for the victims’ side, said the court awarded life imprisonment and fines in line with the charges proved during the trial.
