Guwahati, October 23: AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam on Thursday strongly criticized the Assam government over its proposed bills on banning polygamy, tackling “love jihad,” and preserving Satras.
Speaking to the media, Rafiqul Islam said, “The Chief Minister of Assam is very worried and depressed right now. That’s why he’s trying to get people to his side by talking like this. But I think the people of Assam have already decided that this time, they are not with him.”
He added, “There’s a session coming in November. You are the Chief Minister and the head of the government — if you want to bring bills, bring them. But instead of shouting for a month that you will bring this and that, just bring and show us.”
Rafiqul Islam further slammed the BJP-led government for “failing to deliver on long-pending promises,” particularly regarding the tribal status demand. “For the past 10 years, our six tribes have been demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. You keep assuring that the bill will come in November or December, but nothing has happened. The BJP government has been here for a decade — five years under Sonowal and five under Himanta Biswa Sarma — yet you have failed to protect the tribes,” he said.
He also accused the government of neglecting land rights for indigenous communities. “You did not give land to the people of Shankhala, to those in Charchapuri, or to the tea tribes living in Bagan areas. Now, when your government’s tenure is ending, you are suddenly saying you will bring bills and give land — what were you doing for 10 years?” he questioned.
On the proposed “love jihad” law, the AIUDF leader said, “You are talking about love jihad, but give our daughters freedom first. Our daughters and sisters are afraid to go out in the evening because of daily rape and molestation cases. Creating a safe environment for women is your responsibility. You have not been able to ensure that in 10 years.”
Rafiqul Islam also accused the government of politicizing the death of singer Zubeen Garg. “He (the Chief Minister) is very shameful. Zubeen Garg was loved by everyone in Assam, and people want justice for him. But instead of a CBI probe, the case was kept with the CID and an SIT formed under the BJP government. Even BJP workers are now demanding justice. You haven’t even filed a charge sheet yet,” he said.
“This shows that the government is not serious about justice — it’s just doing politics over Zubeen’s death. This drama will end badly for them,” the MLA added.
