Guwahati, Oct 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that the state narrowly escaped a major disaster in Kokrajhar after a portion of a railway track was damaged in an IED blast on Wednesday night.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “Yesterday in Kokrajhar, our state narrowly escaped a terrible accident. At around 3 a.m., the DGP called me and informed me that a part of a special train route had been damaged in an IED blast. Luckily, the train had already passed when the loco pilot noticed the explosion site.”
“The loco pilot immediately alerted the authorities, including the Railways and the Railway Police, thereby averting a mishap. Had the loco pilot not noticed it in time, we might have woken up to very tragic news by 3 a.m.,” Sarma stated.

He added, “The Kokrajhar Police swiftly launched an overnight investigation, and the damaged railway track was repaired the same night, allowing train services on the route to resume normal operations.”
“One person has been identified, and he has multiple cases registered against him in Assam and Jharkhand. The Assam Police will soon arrest him in connection with the IED blast,” Sarma said.
Assam Director General of Police Harmit Singh visited Kokrajhar on Thursday to review the security situation after a powerful IED explosion damaged a section of the railway track between Kokrajhar and Salakati stations around midnight.
