Dibrugarh, Jan 7: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of conspiring to delete the names of lakhs of anti-BJP voters from Assam’s electoral rolls.
Addressing a press conference in Dibrugarh, Gogoi alleged that a plan had been drawn up to remove around 10,000 voters from each Assembly constituency under the direction of state BJP president Dilip Saikia.
Gogoi claimed the alleged plan was discussed during a virtual BJP meeting on the evening of January 4, which he said he overheard. According to him, the meeting focused on strict implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with district- and mandal-level functionaries allegedly instructed to identify voters who do not support the BJP.
He further alleged that state minister Ashok Singhal had been entrusted with overseeing the removal of voters’ names in 60 Assembly constituencies, and that government booth-level officers (BLOs) were being involved alongside BJP functionaries.
Warning of serious consequences, Gogoi said the continuation of such a process could lead to the deletion of lakhs of names, undermining the democratic process. He also alleged that the SIR exercise could be used to label voters from certain communities as “D-voters” (doubtful voters).
Gogoi demanded that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intervene immediately to halt what he termed an unlawful and politically motivated exercise.
At the same press conference, Gogoi asserted that Raijor Dal would defeat BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi from the Mariani Assembly constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections. He also condemned an attack on a Raijor Dal leader and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
