Assam: Man killed in police firing after machete attack on neighbours in Sivasagar

Sivasagar, Jan 7: A 41-year-old man was killed in police firing on Tuesday night in Assam’s Sivasagar district after he attacked his neighbours with a machete and later attempted to assault a police team that arrived to control the situation, officials said.

The incident occurred at Bordiroi Tea Estate in the Demow area. The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Pandov, a resident of the locality.

According to police, Pandov, allegedly under the influence of locally brewed liquor known as sulai, created a disturbance in the neighbourhood around 8.30 pm. When his next-door neighbours, Mortin Pandov and his wife Geeta Pandov, asked him to stop the ruckus as their daughter was preparing for her Class 10 board examinations, he allegedly became violent and attacked them with a machete.

Mortin sustained a deep cut to his neck, while Geeta was injured on her leg. Both were initially rushed to Demow Model Hospital and later shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, for advanced treatment.

Hospital sources said Mortin remains in critical condition in the ICU, while Geeta is out of danger.
Police said local members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) tried to restrain Pandov, but he attempted to attack them as well, forcing them to seek police assistance. A team from Demow Police Station, including women personnel, reached the spot and attempted to calm him down.

“For nearly 40 minutes, our team tried to reason with him, but he grew increasingly aggressive and chased the police personnel with the machete,” Demow Co-District Superintendent of Police Hiren Kumar Deka said.

“When he advanced towards a police commando with the weapon, two warning shots were fired. As he continued to move forward, two shots were fired aiming at his leg. He was hit in the thigh,” Deka added.

Pandov was taken to Demow Model Hospital in a police vehicle due to the unavailability of an ambulance and later shifted to AMCH, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police sources said Pandov had a history of alcohol abuse and domestic violence. His wife and five children—one son and four daughters—had reportedly left the house two days earlier due to repeated assaults.

After the incident, family members returned and recounted years of abuse. Neighbours also confirmed that Pandov frequently created fear in the locality.

An inquiry into the police firing has been initiated, officials said.
