Guwahati, Feb 8: In a significant political development the Assam Cabinet on Saturday approved the public disclosure of findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and others.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to the Cabinet decision, findings of the SIT that do not fall under the category of classified or confidential information will be made public. The move signals the government’s intent to place details of the probe in the public domain amid growing political interest surrounding the case.
In a further step, the Cabinet also approved referring the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for investigation by central agencies. This indicates that the case may now move beyond the state-level probe and be taken up for a more expansive investigation at the national level.
The development is expected to intensify political debate in the state in the coming days.
The Cabinet also approved the constitution of the 8th Assam Pay Commission, 2026, which will examine and recommend revisions in pay, allowances, and service conditions of state government employees, keeping in view the state’s financial position.
